Today (15 May), the 26th Taipei Film Festival announces the Taipei Film Award nominations at the press conference. This year, 271 submissions were received, including 48 features, 49 documentaries, 157 short films, and 17 animations. After a vibrant discussion among the second-round judges, 31 films (15 features, 6 documentaries, 5 short films and 5 animations) received nominations. Among the nominated films, The Pig, The Snake and The Pigeon leads with 13 nominations, including Best Feature, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actress, and Best Supporting Actor. It is followed by OLD FOX with ten nominations and BIG with eight nominations.
The acting nominations prove to be an all-star list. The Best Actor nominees include Frederick LEE for Fish Memories, BAI Run-yin for OLD FOX, Vic CHOU for Be With Me, Ethan JUAN for The Pig, The Snake and The Pigeon and KING Jieh-wen for A Journey in Spring. The Best Actress nominees are Audrey LIN for Trouble Girl, Angel LEE for Child of Tomorrow, YANG Kuei-mei for A Journey in Spring, Esther LIU for Salli, and Chloe XIANG for Suffocating Love.
The Taipei Film Award judging process consists of the first, second and final rounds. This year, the 16 first-round judges were divided into four groups, including feature, documentary, short film and animation. The eleven second-round judges selected the nominees, and the winners will be announced at the Taipei Film Award ceremony on July 6. In addition, among all the nominated films, the audiences will vote the Audience Choice Award and a jury composed of professional journalists will select the Press Award winner.
This year, director Fruit CHAN is the Taipei Film Award jury president and Little Cheung, with which Chan made his name, will have a highly anticipated special screening at the Festival. From an innocent child’s point of view, the film examines the harsh realities in life; it goes deep into the Kowloon communities in the old Hong Kong and unveils the nostalgia and homesickness of different generations, serving as a witness to the social changes before and after the Handover of Hong Kong in 1997.
