By hosting the festival and the competitions every summer, Taipei Film Festival has become a big party where filmmakers from Taiwan and abroad gather together. Moreover, it has created a platform that provides filmmakers with opportunities to share their experiences, leading to the collaboration that benefits the industry. In 2019, Taipei Film Festival launched the new project “Supernova”, inviting ten Taiwanese actors active in film, television and theater to participate in the festival as a way to introduce these promising new talents to filmmakers and audiences. Li Ya-mei, the director of Taipei Film Festival, expresses that nurturing new actors is an urgent matter and Taipei Film Festival acts as a platform which not only allows the filmmakers and the actors, who are passionate about acting, to get to know each other better but boosts the productivity of the industry.
Li further explains that what prompted the festival to launch Supernova was the fact that she noticed the gap between the generations of actors and the outflow of talent. Those selected for Supernova are not ordinary new actors but the best in their fields, however, they still lack the opportunity to be seen by the mass audience. Li says, “I think nurturing new talents is an urgent matter. The Taipei Film Festival must integrate the resources and play the role of a flatform, providing opportunities for the actors to meet with the filmmakers and boosting the productivity of the industry.”
A series of events are tailor-made for the Supernova participants. They will get to see a wide range of films selected for Taipei Film Festival in advance to enrich their viewing experience and knowledge. During the festival, they will be invited to introduce the films to the audience and by doing so, they will have the chance to make an impression on the audience. Moreover, the actors will attend various festival events, including opening and closing film screenings, parties and award ceremonies to make more contacts in the industry. Li emphasizes that the festival hopes Supernova will be held every year and in this case, more and more new talents will be introduced to the audiences.
